Nikolaus W. Schües was born in Hamburg in 1936. After his apprenticeship in the shipping business in Hamburg, London, Dublin and New York, he joined the shipping company F. Laeisz in 1961. Since 1973 he is partner of F. Laeisz. As of 1986, he has been a member of the Plenary Assembly of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. He was elected Vice-President in 1990 and President in 1996. After his presidency he was re-elected as Vice-President in 2002. Since 1997 Mr Schües is Vice-President of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK).
