Enrique Barón Crespo, Chairman of the Committee on International Trade, European Parliament, former President of the European Parliament, Spain
Mr. Barón Crespo, born in Madrid in 1944, graduated
in law from the University of Madrid, in
1965. As a practising lawyer, he specialised in
labour law, and acted for defendants in political
cases (1970–1977). He was a Deputy in the Cortes
(1977–1986) and was Minister of Transport,
Tourism and Communications (1982–1985). Since
1987, Mr. Barón Crespo is International President
of the European Movement. After election to the
European Parliament he was President of the
European Parliament (1989–1992), and was President
of the Group of the Party of European
Socialists in the EP (1999-2004). He was Chairman
of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (1992–1995)
and is currently Chairman of the Committee on
International Trade. Mr. Barón Crespo is author
of numerous articles on economic and social
questions, and books, e.g. “Population and Hunger
in the World”, “The Automobile Civilisation”, and
“Europe at the dawn of the Millennium”.
