Prof. Dr. Bernd Gottschalk, President, German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Germany
Dr. Bernd Gottschalk, born in Lübeck in 1943,
studied economics at the Universities of Hamburg,
Saarbrücken and Stanford, California, and earned
his doctorate in 1971 in Hamburg (Dr. rer. pol.).
From 1972 to 1996, he has held numerous executive
positions in various divisions of the Daimler-
Benz AG: Public Relations, Economic Transport
Policy; Plant Manager of the Mannheim factory;
President of Mercedes-Benz do Brazil. In 1992, Dr.
Gottschalk was appointed Member of the Managing
Board of Mercedes-Benz AG, responsible for
the Commercial Vehicles Division worldwide. In
1996, the Board of the VDA unanimously elected
him as President of the VDA. In addition, Dr.
Gottschalk has various national and international
responsibilities: President of OICA (Organisation
Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles),
Vice-President of BDI, the Federation of German
Industries, President of the BDI Traffic Committee
and Honorary Professor at the Western Saxon
University of Zwickau.
