John Thornhill, European Editor, Financial Times, Great Britain
John Thornhill, currently the Paris-based editor of
the European edition of the Financial Times,
joined the newspaper in 1989 and has since
reported from 36 countries.
After several years in London as a City reporter,
industrial correspondent, and Lex columnist, he
moved to Moscow in 1994 where he covered Boris
Yeltsin’s presidency, the Russian financial crisis,
and the rise of Vladimir Putin. From 2000-2002 he
was Asia editor during which time he interviewed
Junichiro Koizumi, Lee Kuan Yew, and Kim Dae-
Jung. After becoming foreign news editor in 2002,
he helped shape the FT’s coverage of the Iraq war.
In 2004 he moved to Paris as bureau chief, taking
over responsibility for the European edition the
following year.
John is a graduate of Oxford University and the
London School of Economics. He is married with
one son.
