Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ernst-Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Dean, Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, University of California Santa Barbara, USA

Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker was born in 1939. After studying physics and zoology in Hamburg and Freiburg, he was professor for biology (University of Essen), President of the University of Kassel and then became Director at the UN Centre for Science and Technology for Development, New York. Subsequent appointments included: Director, Institute for European Environmental Policy, Bonn-London-Paris; President, Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy; Member of the German Parliament, and Member, World Commission on the Social Dimensions of Globalisation. Since 2006, Prof. von Weizsäcker is Dean of Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, UCSB. He has published numerous English-language books mainly on ecological topics and received the following honours: Premio de Natura; Honorary Professor, University of Valparaiso, Chile; Duke of Edinburgh Gold Medal; Honorary degree, Soka University, Tokyo; Takeda Award.
