Evonik Industries

Evonik Industries is a modern industrial group based in Germany with operations around the world. Our Chemicals, Energy and Real Estate business areas are positioned at the forefront of their sectors and we are systematically strengthening their quality and technological edge. In 2006 Evonik had over 43,000 employees and generated sales of around €14.8 billion.

In its Chemicals business area, previously known by the name Degussa, Evonik ranks among the global industry leaders. We operate production facilities in about 30 countries, employing a workforce of some 34,000, over half of it in Germany. We hold leading positions in 80 percent of our Chemicals business and we are constantly striving to increase this.

The core competences of the Energy business area, which has 4,600 employees, are the planning, financing, construction and operation of coal-fired power stations. Evonik is also positioned among the leaders in renewable energies in Germany. Our operations in this field center on power generation from mine gas and biomass and the use of geothermal energy.

The Real Estate business area is one of Germany’s largest private housing companies with about 60,000 residential units and a 50 percent stake in TreuHandStelle GmbH (THS), which has a portfolio of 77,000 units. The business focuses on letting housing to private households and has around 500 employees.

Evonik in China

The Chemicals business area of Evonik has been producing specialty chemicals products in China since the early nineties and a variety of trade ties have existed even longer. The Group now has nearly 20 companies in China, with production sites in 10 cities. In June 2006 Evonik brought the first production facilities into operation at its multi-user site in Shanghai, with a polyester and a colorants plant. Another milestone for Evonik in the Greater China region was the groundbreaking for the new integrated production plant for methyl methacrylates and methacrylate specialties in Shanghai in 2007. With a volume of €250 million, this new plant is the second largest single investment ever made by the Chemicals business area of Evonik. The world-scale facility is scheduled to come on stream in mid-2009.

Evonik has also continuously widened the scope of its research and development work in China and now operates in Shanghai one of the largest R&D centres of any multinational company in Shanghai.
